She Don't Need No Stinkin' Gate! Wait, Yes She Does.

You know how with your first kid you are really nervous about everything? You are nervous about sleeping, rolling, crawling, walking, eating, climbing, and breathing. Then you have another baby, and you realize that they are going to sleep, roll, crawl, walk, climb, eat, and breath just fine so you sort of loosen the leash a little bit.

Avery was one year old when we moved into our house. The steps going from the first level to the second are really steep, and they are less steep now than before we bought the joint. We gated the steps forever. I was afraid she was going to misstep and fall down them. When we did let her practice climbing and descending, we instilled a large amount of fear into her. We, and when I say we, I mean me, insisted she never carry anything, walk slowly, and sit down to come down. It wasn't until she was probably two and a half that she was allowed to roam free, ungated from the upstairs world.

Fast forward to present day. Kendall is one and a half. She has been a free bird for about a month now. In the past few weeks, she has been allowed to walk up and down at whim. I mean, I watch her go up and try to get to the steps if I hear her coming down just in case. I guess we got a little to relaxed with giving Kendall freedom in a body that is still a little unstable.

Tuesday night, Kendall had a little accident. When she was coming down, she slipped about half way down the steps and tumbled down. She hit her head, scratched her face and neck, and cut her lip. I took her to the ER just to make sure all was well. She flirted with her doctor. She was wondering what all the fuss was about. I was a nervous wreck. She was ecstatic because she got stickers.

Anyway. The next day I babied her beyond belief, and took away her step climbing freedom until further notice.

She chugged down some milk with a few battle wounds the next morning.  Milk makes everything better. Notice Avery right next to her. She didn't leave Kendall's side all day. She was a caring big sister.

Here are her neck wounds.

Avery let Kendall lay next to her on the couch and read her some books.

Kendall got a small burst of energy and had to bust a move with Avery. She was pretty slow moving the day after and didn't do all that much and when she did, it was only for a few minutes. Then she'd come crawl on the couch and look for some love.

She did color for a little bit. The thrill of all that exertion must have exhausted her. She laid right there. Even with a goose egg the size of a golf ball on her head and road rash she sure is cute.

Hehe!

She had a pretty lazy day Wednesday. But Thursday she woke up ready to make up for it.

The fancy shoes made an appearance early in the day. She read books in Avery's bear den.

Apparently, she is not afraid of the steps. I am. She is forbidden.

But after a morning of running, dancing, reading, eating, rolling, chasing, and jumping practice, girlfriend was wore out.

After a day of being a doting big sister, Avery went back to training her little sister to be tough. Kendall went back to annoying her big sister. They fought over toys and tattled on each other. I'd say that everyone is back to good. Everyone except for the Mommy who feels guilty that her little lady fell down. Gates have been reinstalled. Freedoms have been revoked. Lessons have been learned.

Just another reason why I am going to get the Mother of the Year Award.
