Dr. Seuss's Birthday and Read Across America Day

I have been coming across a lot of projects using popular children's books to honor the birthday of the best children's book author ever, Dr. Seuss. It also happens to be Read Across America Day. Avery's 4K class has been celebrating all week. They have invited parents in to read. I get to go tomorrow. We get to bring our favorite book and Avery picked David Kirk's Miss Spider's Tea Party.

But back to the project. One of our favorite books is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.  I saw an inspiration for this project on another blog called toddlerapproved.blogspot.com. Here is what we came up with.  First we read the book, obviously.

I painted a canvas light blue like the sky while I gave my project partners tasks to complete.

Kendall was given some crackers and crayons. Gosh, this girl eats a lot.

Avery's job was to get out the letters for her name and Kendall's name.

It was also her job to cut out the coconuts. She has such determination.

I made the leaves and cut those out.

I drew the tree trunk and added the leaves.

We made little cuts in the leaves to give them some texture and awesomeness.

Avery wanted her name climbing up the coconut tree and Kendall's name falling down it. Then, in a spurt of creativity, Avery suggested we write, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Will there be enough room?" just like in the book!

Here's Kendall's scribbly masterpiece...or is it abstract?  I see a duck hiding behind some weeds.

Here's the final product. We hung it above Avery's art desk. It was a fun project to make and showed the girls how books can influence us in many ways. We found art in a book that we love.

Happy 107th Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

"The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the more places you will go!"
